Holding the breath with bandhas (energetic valves) in the practice of Vinyasa Yoga was taught by Krishnamacharya, though it is rarely discussed in Ashtanga Vinyasa or other styles. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to apply breath retention to specific moments in Sun Salutations, standing poses, arm balances and backbends. This approach will help you access your true strength while calming and focusing the mind.
Proper integration of the bandhas improves the flow of energy and information through the body allowing the cells to absorb more oxygen, and transform yoga into a practice of generating and absorbing energy, rather than depleting it.
Theory and Practice: Class begins with an overview of scriptures that describe methods for working with subtle energies, along with an exploration of breath anatomy, core stability and various types of Bandha.
We’ll also explore some of the oldest recorded shat kriyas (cleansing actions) of Hatha yoga involving breath control (some dating back to the 14th century), before moving into an asana practice inspired by studies of many lineages and modern masters.
